Negotiating a Better Book Deal
As writers and illustrators, our work is near and dear to our hearts. We recognize the artistic value of our work, but not always the business value of our work. The hardest thing, sometimes, is setting our emotions aside. But when it comes to negotiating book contracts, that’s what you need to do.
Negotiating book contracts is not that different from negotiating the purchase of a car, a raise or promotion at work, or the terms of a speaking engagement. In all cases, you “do your homework,” prioritize your goals, devise a strategy, and negotiate.
Negotiating book contracts takes timeor at least it should. It involves give and take (this is business, after all, and everyone is looking out for their own interests). A deal can be achieved only if the contract terms are satisfying to everyone involvedand that includes you!
So don’t just sign on the bottom line. Think seriously about what you want out of your book contract. Seek legal advice with regard to terms and conditions you don’t understand. Resolve to have some fun bargaining!
And keep in mind, no matter what the subject matter of the contract, your goal should always be the same: clear, thorough, contract language that delineates all parties’ obligations and rights, and ultimately, solves more problems than it creates.
