Insurance Issues For the Self-Employed Author or Artist (Cont.)

Health Insurance

Hospital and medical insurance is available on an individual basis and sometimes through trade groups like the National Writers Union or the American Institute of Graphic Arts. The most affordable programs are offered through HMOs. Other options include point-of-service plans and medical savings accounts. Some state-sponsored insurance coverage is available to individuals of limited means.

Disability Insurance

Disability insurance replaces a portion of an author’s or artist’s lost earnings when the author or artist becomes ill or is injured. Long term disability insurance is more affordable than short term disability insurance. Premiums generally are based on the age of the insured. Be aware, though, benefit payments usually don’t start until three to six months after the insured becomes disabled, so there is still a period of time during which the author or artist must cover for his or her loss of income.

Dismemberment Insurance

Artists who receive a high return for their work arguably may view their hands as capital assets. Insurance for severe injury or dismemberment compensates for loss resulting from catastrophic accidents.
